Part of our assignment was to critique other photographers so I will dedicate this post to that purpose.
Photographers:
1. Tom Grissman
I really enjoyed Tom Grissman's pictures. His editing techniques make the pictures very bright and clean looking which I really like. Below is a picture of his that I really liked. The subject seems to be an old bait shop. The colors and feeling of the photo are inspiring and enjoyable.![]()
2. Samantha Mastropolo
Of all the photographer we were asked to critque, Samantha Mastropolo was my favorite. Her collection was obviously of fashion photography, a genre that I really enjoy. Her pictures display the clothes very well but they also have a very classy, artful feel to them.![]()
3. J.D. Small
J.D. Small's work is clearly targeted toward men. His collection had a lot of photos of woman and cars, but this picture of a building was incredibly surprising and refreshing. It is a very compeling picture because of the different shapes, angels and lighting in the photo. His talent is very obvious in this photo, despite his other subject matter.![]()
4. Bill Schwob
Bill Schwob's work was very interesting. His collection of photos didnt have a centeral theme but they were all very nice. This picture is the most memorable to me. THe blueness of it is calming and I just want to know why he took this. It seems like an add for computers or something, Im just very interested.![]()
5. Scoot W. Baker
Scott W. Baker is my favorite photographer from this group. His work is the most beautiful and powerful. The subjects are real people and objects making all his work very relatable. This picture of the red door just really stood out to me. I think it is because of the color and the contrast between the shed, the door and the wall. Its very colorful and memorable.
This is the first picture in my convential photo series. For my convential photos I did not edit them at all. My teammate, Uchenna served as my model for this picture. When we were walking around Gallery Place Downtown DC finding things for Uchenna to photograph for her citylife theme, we saw this sculpture. It is a large multicolored metal scultpture that sits outside a popular downtwon restuarant. I thought that if Uchenna went inside the sculpture and posed it would fit ever nicely in my photoseries. We took may tries of this picture and this is my favorite take. She is peeking out of the sculpture as if she knows she is a person in a strange place.
This is the second picture in my series. While still downtown Uchenna chose to go to Freedom Plaza and take most of her pictures. There, were these large pots with plants inside. I wanted Uchenna to go inside and just stand as if it were normal for her to be resting inside a large plant pot. This picture has a very beautiful light because of the time of day when they were taken. The sun was beginning to set so the pictures get a very cozy yellowish tint on all of them. To me, it gives them an intimate feeling and a innocent look that makes the content of my pictures even funnier.
This is the third picture in my convential photo series. This is also taken in Freedom Plaza. It is a very popular place downtown for people to skateboard and sit when it is nice outside. This day was very sunny and only had a slight breeze making it a really nice day to take pictures outside. All around Freedom Plaza are these trees that have these benches all around them perfect for sitting on a day like this one. For this picture I wanted Uchenna and Stacia to sit on the inside of the ring and sit backwards on the benches. This picture is ironic, clever and has very pretty light. Uchenna and Stacias placing is strategic and adds to the mood of this picture.
This is the fourth photo of my convential photo series. This picture is probably my favorite picture of my series. It is the funniest and most charming, I believe. Stacia, my model, was very willing to make this photo as amazing as possible. I had the idea for someone to be inside a trashcan, talking on the phone as if it were a normal seat. Stacia complied with my vision and happy sat inside this trashcan. THe photo is very funny for many reasons. One the actual trashcan part is next to Stacia showing the lengths she actually had to go through to chose this as her resting place. Then there is the fact that she on the phone and smiling. All of these elements make this photo very cheeky and fit perfectly in my theme.
This is the last picture in my convential photo series. In this photo Stacia has placed herself inside a bicycle rack. I posed Stacia in this picture so her arm would be in an actual bike lock and she could be sitting in the rack, purposedly trappded. But once I got ready to take the picture Stacia lifted her foot, blocking her arm in the lock. But her position and smile make up for her blocking the lock. My theme was an odd one to create photos for and it became difficult to find places and ways to create thought provoking, funny and charming pictures. The bike rack came at a great time because it was a refreshing idea and created a funny picture.
This is the second photo in my series. One of my team members, Stacia Robinson, chose animals as her theme and so she could take pictures we; her, myself and our other teammate Uchenna Offor all went to the National Zoo. I thought I would take a picture of my teammates inside the zoo sign. For me I thought this was kind of funny because it isnt the zoo sign that people usually take pictures on. When editing the picture I chose to brighten the contrast quite a bit to really show off the sign and slightly hide the people in it.
This is the third photo in my series. For this one, Stacia Robinson is my model extraordinarie. We were walking back to the metro from the Zoo and right outside were basically forest of bamboo. So I asked Stacia to basically disappear into the bamboo so I could take a picture. This is one of the most literal translations of my theme in my photographers. There is nothing stranger than a bamboo forest in Washington, DC and its quite odd to having someone standing in it at that. When editing this photo I just increased the brigthness to really play up the leaves and further disguise Stacia.
This is the fourth picture in my digital series. For this photo, my teammate Uchenna make a suggestion of her a Stacia sitting on the pilars of the apartment building. Once they were on the pilars I wanted them to stand on them and pretend to be statues. All of the people walking found this picture to be very funny, confirming its place in my theme; People in Strange Places. When editing this picture I enchanced the red hues and then increased the brightness to give the picture a red bright feeling. It also makes it seem lightly old which I would imagine a building with watch statues to be.
This is the last photo in my digital series. We stopped in Starbucks for a coffee and bathroom break and this picture just came to me. I thought it would be very funny and strange to take a picture of a female entering the men's bathroom. I thought of this because I was considering doing it myself, while I was waiting for a woman to finish in the bathroom. I used Uchenna as my model and aksed her to slightly open the door as if she was walking in and then look back with an embarrassed, "Oh no you caught me!", face. In editing I only ligthened the photo a bit because it was quite dark on my camera.
